The breakfast table next to me was suddenly occupied by Hilda and Marie (South Africa). Lots of chatting while chewing. Learned Hilda (large rings covered with diamonds) has no children and her husband does all the cooking.
Kevin the host.
Robin Hoods Bay in the morning
The sisters have a "rest" day today and dealing with their laundry. Their bags are being carried by one of the agencies. Tomorrow they will Bus to Scarborough and take a train to Scotland. From there another day off Before starting on Sunday on the John Muir path for 12 days (supposed to be easier than the C2C) finishing with London and Shopping.
Breakfast choice was the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. Gary encouraged trying seafood while in this location. It was delicious.
Caught local bus to Whitby and suddenly became a tourist, along with thousands of others.
As I arrived at the bus stop 2 blocks from where my bed was realized the two women across the street were familiar. It was the Swiss mom and daughter Rose and Marie last seen back at Shap (later that day my knee gave out). I dashed across street as quickly as the knee would allow. Quick catch up of our walks, hugs, goodbyes as both of our busses pulled up.
Whitby Harbor
First destination was Whitby Abbey. Climbed the 199 steps (sign warning people taking their life in danger because of the climb, no problem for me other than the knee).
Wandered the ancient cemetery below the Abbey outside St Mary's, which Bram Stoker found fascinating (Dracula).
Learned more history about the Benedictine Abbey, the local family (Cholmley) which benefited from Henry VIII and his greed to accumulate wealth (dissolved the abbeys and claim all the revenue for his own use (fatness and wives).
Tomb stones are fragile about 300-400 years old.
Stone sculptures from the 8th century church.
Whitby Abbey
Coffin
I was there!
Jet Jeweler at work
Where my earrings from this visit and 4 years ago came from.
This is where local residents buy their plants - Gary - Not very extensive
Ballet in Whitby??
Lunch at Subway. Salad, well, almost a salad. No spinach. No banana peppers. No exotic veggies. But certainly a better salad than any seen in the past 2 weeks.
Subway was popular
More of a city where a constant source of taxis is needed, at least on days when horses of families are in town.
Legs resting in Subway.
Stylish 12 year old
BIG activity for kids and parents - crab catching.
Seems like every young boy looks like a "Billy Elliot" from the movie. There is a resemblance among the English.
Walking on the pier outside Whitby to the lighthouse I could almost picture Soames and Irene strolling (Forsyte Saga - John Galsworthy), only in more elegant period clothing.
Musicians
Apparently it is okay here for children to play casino games.
Rhubarb crumble ice cream
Music and Movement while waiting for the bus
Now it is the Left ankle that is swollen. What else can cause grief?
Back to Robin Hoods Bay - low tide
Sat outside the end of the Coast to Coast lwaiting for any walkers to arrive. Talked with 2 ladies doing the Cleveland Way. They had done the C2C two years ago and were hanging around watching for long distance walkers to arrive. What they were doing was easier, and didn't have the high standard of what myself and the others have accomplished.
While sitting there and telling trail tales (death of the woman between Grasmere and Patterdale) being the highlight/low point, Jean Pierre came down the steep hill towards the water.
Instantly I jumped up. He saw me. reunion!! Last seen him at breakfast at Richmond, now probably will never see him again. So much for random trail companions
I was in their computer system from 4 years ago and the previous purchase of Jet earrings. Small world. Rather the world is now smaller due to technology.
