(Backup) Hobbled to Half Way

Day 14 Walking, I Walked!  May 31
Intake Farm, Littlebeck to Streonshahl, Robin Hoods Bay
11 miles (I took Lois' Detour so cut off about 3 miles), 5 hours

Judith my hostess

Hamlet of Littlebeck.

History of Littlebeck involves mining for Alum.  Alum was/is used for tanning leather.

There was also a maste woodcarver, Thomas Whittaker from Littlebeck who made furniture from English oak. He always used the image of a gnome someplace on every piece of furniture to identify it as his.  A gnome is from German folklore and is the guardian of oak.

Littlebeck Woods.

The Hermitage, a boulder hollowed out to form a small cave.  Carved above the entrance is the date - 1790.

Looking back towards yesterday's short cut down to Intake Farm.

Asked for directions at Falling Foss Tea Garden, the helpful young man (looked just like about 8 others I have seen) pointed at my map and wanted to send be back to Littlebeck.  I said "no", I left there 1.5 hours ago.  Then he figured out where these feet should head.

Followed the May Beck down to a parking lot where families complete with piles of kids and often 2 well behaved dogs were setting off on day hikes.

Robin Hoods Bay and the North Sea, still lots of downhill troubles for the knees (plural as is the left one now has been feeling twinges).

Crossed Sneaton Low Moor and followed a busy roadway around the Graystone Hills. Had to keep jumping off the road and up onto the little bit of grass on the right side.

I think this white horse was previously photographed.

Down through Fylingthorpe past the Lincoln House where I stayed the last time.  It is no longer a B&B - probably a good thing!

Slowly worked way Down Hill.  Very Steep to Robin Hoods Bay. Packed with holiday crowds.

First viewing of the shore and realized the Tide Was Out!

Couldn't believe the Visitors on the beach. Terrible sand, not really sand, more like dirt.  No wonder the British love to travel to Florida and the Caribbean islands.

Views of RHB as I worked my way down the Steep hill.

Staggered and limped my way down to the sand, and way way out to get the official photos of the End of the Coast to Coast (halfway for Lois).

Tossing the pebbled that traveled with from the Irish Sea to the North Sea.

Holiday families!

Met Dave and Linda from breakfast as they were heading down for the ceremonial photos with the Sea

Celebrated with ice cream.

Staying at Streinshalh. A lovely B&B where I have a 3rd floor single room - en suite bathroom. Luxury!  The window looks over the rooftops towards the Bay and southern bluff.  Was given this privileged room because of staying two nights because of the Rest Day tomorrow. I love it!

Met Hilda and Marie on the steep hill in RHB

Met the Canadian also from back at Ingleby

Signing the Official C2C book.

Day 13 Walking (I did walk but slow), May 30
Glaisdale to Littlebeck
Red House Farm to Intake Farm
8.4 miles, 5 hours

Map for today and tomorrow's walk.  Some people combined the days into one distance. So thankful I did not.

Crowing Roosters woke me early, oh, life down on the farm.

Canadian couple at breakfast have hired (rented) a car for three weeks and have been touring.  Their next destination is the Shetland Islands.  I have always wanted to go way up there.   They have traveled extensively to other countries and really prefer the far north, with less people:  Baffin Island (shared my experience there), Greenland, Iceland, Norway.

Tom in the kitchen chopping mushrooms.

Breakfast for two

Chair in my bedroom

Sandra and Tom my hosts from 4 years ago.  So fun to be remembered and welcomed back.

There is Glaisdale up on the hill

Arncliff Arms where last nights dinner was.

Petrol (gas) station

Here is the Glaisdale train station for sale. We watched the show "Escape to the Country" and this was one of the properties offered.

Beggars Bridge

Walkers Bridge

River Esk

Looking back down the path in the East Arncliff Woods

Wild garlic was such a luscious smell.

Bench honoring Freddy and Willy, man's best friend

Could this be the place in Ireland where hauling peat everyday is needed?

Advice from another who got it from another:   when going Up hills place the good leg first. When going Diwn place the bad leg first.

St Hedda's in Egton Bridge

Old Toll Station

Grosmont Train Station

Tea and tuna

My Server Terry, I said he looked rather Irish

The climb up from Grosmont was practically straight up 700 feet.  Took it slow and easy!

Stiff fine for not picking up after Fido

That is the North Sea way off in the distance. Tomorrow will reach those waters.

Where did the cup come from????  Haven't seen a McDonald's since leaving St Point.

Passing by High Quebec Farm.

Finally made it to this night's home

Again, same bedroom as 4 years ago.   The hot pink bathroom is still next door.  After a lovely soak to try to relax knee, today's Walking clothes all got dunked in the tub.  Previously I had noticed on entering clean rooms or house that I sort of had an odor. Today I could smell myself as I walked.  Not pleasant.

Had tea in the kitchen with Judith my hostess and the other two, the only other two, walkers seen all day.  Dave and Linda are English and doing the C2C to celebrate Linda turning 60.  In a month they are going to Scotland for two weeks.  Last summer they spent 21 days biking across France.  Became tired of the rich foods with heavy sauces and really wanted a pizza.  I thought that sounded just as heavy.  They are both good eaters and are most of the home cooked meal last night.  All the platters were empty, and they have both ordered the Full English breakfast for this morning, plus each had a large bowl of cereal, ate all the toast offered.

Dave carried on the outside of his daypack as little stuffed teddy bear, who was along for the ride.  Apparently teddy travels always with them, and once on a hike in Greece "jumped" out of the pack and fell down a ravinez. Of course Dave scrambled down to rescue his little friend.

Judith will cook our evening meal here.  Probably more expensive than I would spend, but as there is nowhere else to go, it is appreciated.

Injury Stories:

Learned a man on day one had a heart attack going up Dent Hill.  He spent 3 days in the hospital where a stunt was put in.  He continued the C2C after the surgery. Said he felt much better.

Another man fell while crossing one of the mountain passes and dislocated he shoulder.  Fortunately there were two doctors from Austria hiking right behind him, and they quickly pull the shoulder back into position. He continued but wore a sling.

Local teenagers were swimming in a waterfall near Keld last Friday and one of them drowned.

Home cooked dinner prepared by Judith:  chicken pie, mashed potatoes, carrots and beans, cauliflower, and cooked cabbage.

Dessert was pear chocolate cake

I am collapsed in the bed enjoying not moving.  Wish the leg would let this hiker just walk normally. Wore the knee brace today, used the Diclofenac, took Tylenol, but not the tramadol.
