(Backup) (Backup) Riding a Packhorse

Day 10 Of The Walk, May 27
Pottergate Guest House, Richmond to Ingleby House Farm, Ingleby Cross
22.5 miles, however I did Not walk

At breakfast there were 2 Canadian couples walking together.  They live 2 hours north of Toronto.  Almost thought they were Americans because of their loudness, and talking about Home Depot and McDonald's.

Besides myself at a single table Jean Pierre was the other lone guest.  He played with his iPad all through the meal.

Great muesli with extra seeds and lots of fresh fruit to add. Tasty. No cooked foods for me. Barbara seemed surprised that I didn't even want Toast to finish the meal off with.  "Toast" the British film - very good

Barbara outside her B&B The Pottergate House.  She was really sweet and so helpful arranging my transportation for today.

Was collected by Packhorse baggage handlers at 9 a.m.  Just as I was coming out the door the 9 women who have formed up a group came walking by as they set off in today's hike.  They wished me well.

Joe my driver, was very talkative, concerned about my knee, and suggest I buy a small rucksack (WHERE????) and let him haul my backpack, for a fee.  Great idea, but also they don't do the C2C in reverse.  I have no real problem with the backpack, providing the knees will remember their main role in existing!

Had my first political discussion about American politics.  Interesting!

While driving about the countryside as luggage was collected or dropped off we passed a field where the gypsies are beginning to gather for the upcoming Gypsie Fair.   Horses, wagons, caravans, dogs and kids all over the place.

Joe wasn't sure if I would be allowed into the B&B that early in the day.  Some hosts are very strict on not letting guests in until a certain time, such as 3:30 or 4:00.

Fortunately Jane said her rooms were ready and as I was the first to arrive, I could chose.  Shown the options there was no question where this body would stay...the new Yorkshire Shepherds Hut. Kind of like a small camper, but larger than ours.  No real kitchen area, but a real bathroom with shower, toilet...and Sink!

Where the butter and cream is kept for the scone waiting for me.

The Hut is set out in the back facing their beautiful garden.  Sheep to the side just outside the fence.  Idyllic!

Sat outside relaxing when Thomas the Cat, (not Tank) came strolling up and made himself comfy.

Best Buddies, kind of nice to be covered with cat fur again.

Jane and Malcom my hosts told me there was a wedding this afternoon and the bride would be coming up the lane next to the farm. I watched.

The other barn space that is now used for guests.

Used for horses.

Greenhouse here

Ingleby House Farm from the front.

Learned that the John Deere tractors here are not made in Iowa most likely but in Newcastle.

This is why Britain is such a wonderful place to walk.  Public footpaths, public rights of way, permissive paths, the land is available to everyone.

A little environment growing on top of a post.

Local dogs taking their humans for a stroll.

Hung around the lane waiting for the Bridal Party to return.  It was worth it!

And, the bridal party

Tried out the knees with a walk down to the Blue Bell to make a reservation for food.  Apparently as it is the One and Only booking a table is necessary.

Local hedge trimmers

A game was in progress.  Did he throw a "googlie"?

Americans might have participated in WWI and WWII, my own father stationed here in England as a medic during the 2nd big war, with the loss of many lives, but our homes and towns were not totally destroyed, nor was there to long slow process of recovery after each tragic event.  Here the losses were felt in every tiny hamlet.

Learned that this Farm had 30 "mums" sheep, 39 lambs, and one very happy and well satisfied Ram.

Shepherdess at her Hut.

Learned that the two guys with Kieran are Rob and Dave.  They are twins. Dave is the father-in-law of Kieran

Happy Birthday thoughts for my late cousin Robert - a few, or more, times removed.  He was a good guy.  Sad he is not here to share my adventure.
