Day 7 Walking- However No walk happened
🙁. May 24
Kirkby Stephen to Keld via Taxi
That was the route this hiker was supposed to have taken. Instead hung out wandering the tiny village of Kirkby Stephen from 9 until 1 pm.
The homemade rhubarb sauce was so tasty. And there were 2 croissants, plain and chocolate.
The one poached egg looked rather sad all alone on the plate.
Colin the husband (also mole catcher), a chef for 30 years, came out from the kitchen to demonstrate how he made the apple wedges.
Chris the wife chatted a lot. She made the phone call to arrange for the taxi. Told stories of them running a large B&B across the street for years. So large they could seat 25 people for breakfast. After returning from a vacation to India they sold that place and purchased the current building.
Chapel Cottage B&B
My fancy room in Chapel Cottage had a definite Red theme.
Matt and Richard whom I overlapped with yesterday were going all the way to Reeth today. Probably will not see them again.
This is the other B&B Chris and Colin ran. Very narrow but she said it went way back. Must have to seat that many people for breakfast.
Kirkby Stephen Parish Church
Loki Stone
"Anglo Danish cross shaft carved into the bearded figure of a chained devil, representing the old Norse god Loki, one of the earliest Christian symbols of the devil in human shape, which is essentially a northern concept, and was spread over Europe by Scandinavian settlements.
This is the only example in Great Britain and one of two in Europe."
Stones from Norman church were found when the present church was re-built in 1847. The stone came from the original Norman church built around 1150 by monks of St Mary's Abbey in York.
