Day 7 Walking, May 23
Shap to Kirkby Stephen
Brookfield House to Chapel Cottage
20 miles, plus one extra for going wrong way
9.5 hours
All the news was about the attack in Manchester after the concert last night. Another very tragic event. That city is trying to be strong. Feel such sadness for the many young lives lots.
At breakfast Margaret announced to the other three tables that I was planning on doing the C2C both ways. Hope she didn't jinx me.
Wrapped the lambs wool about my toes as an experiment. Set off in good spirits after the breakfast of porridge and fruit salad.
Decorative T.P. Paper
There go the last views of the Lake District
Foot bridge across the motorway
Giant stones to pass through.
THE boulder out in the middle of the moors. Was deposited here by the glacier.
Walked and talked for a distance with Deb and Dave from San Diego. They were not prepared for what this path would be like. Previously they had hiked sections of the Camino de Santiago. That was easy compared to this. They only brought running shoes (trainers they are called here) and we're having trouble. Their large pieces of luggage were be transported by one of the baggage transfer agency's so each only carried a small day pack. Dave open his backpack and pulled out a gallon bag of candy. He offered me a sucker. A butterscotch Sees one. Said they had tons more in their luggage. Told them about my cousin Debbie having sent a box of Sees chocolates. I did think they could have left their American candy at home and given British sweets a try.
Lime Kiln
After opening and closing the gate these feet were required to pass up through that muck and past the cows. Me: move, move!
The sudden warmth and sunshine made Walking challenging in a new way. Thirst. Finally had to stop at a farmhouse and ask to refill the water bladder. I had almost sucked it all down.
Lunch: sweet corn fritter and pineapple salsa on red pepper bread. Sat in sheep pasture to eat meal.
Long hard day in the sun. Rolling hills. Lots of miles of wide open moorland. Many stile climbing. Many gate open and closings.
